Linen Closet Upgrade with Minwax

This blog post is sponsored by Minwax. All opinions are my own.

This year I am all about the simple upgrades that make a big impact and I was excited to finally try a DIY project I’ve wanted to do for awhile - faux floating shelves.

I’ve seen other people tackle this project and I was excited to partner with Minwax to get it done.

So, let’s dive right into it, ok!

Faux floating shelves are such a fun, quick, and beginner-level project that can be completed in just one day! We all have those closets with the wire shelves right? With this DIY, we can create an immediate impact to elevate the look of what is usually a very ordinary space.

To get started, I measured the width and length of each shelf in the closet. My linen closet is incredibly tiny and measures only 13” in depth and 20.5” in width. We make it work, but sheesh I wish it was a bit bigger. Okay, I got a bit distracted, let me focus on this tutorial.

Once I got the measurements, it was time to gather my supplies.

What’s great about this DIY is you can get your hardware store make your cuts for you. I got my ½” plywood cut into 20.5” width pieces.

Once home, I used my miter saw to cut the 1” x 3” piece of wood which will be the front of the shed into 20.5” length pieces.

After making all the cuts, it was time to assemble the shelves to get them ready to stain.

Applying wood glue to one side of the 1” x 3”, I then lined it up with the cut plywood pieces to form the faux floating shelf.

Then I used the clamps to keep the shelf together while the wood glue dries. Repeat this process for all of the shelves. I have five in my linen closet.

Now that all the shelves were assembled, it’s time to bring on the Minwax stain. First, before any staining project, I use Minwax Pre Stain Wood Conditioner to condition and prep the wood for the stain. I applied the pre-conditioner with a clean rag and after 5-15 minutes after application, you can wipe off the excess pre-stain with another clean rag.

Next, I applied one of my favorite Minwax Wood Finish Penetrating Stain in Semi Transparent Golden Oak. Using a stain pad, I generously applied the stain to all the shelves and waited about 15 minutes before wiping off the excess.

I really love the color of this stain and the way it highlights the wood grain.

Now the last thing to do is protect your project! Using Minwax Fast Drying Polyurethane Protective Wood Finish about four hours after applying the stain will keep the shelves looking good day after day.

Once the shelves are dry, it’s time to install them over the existing wire shelves.

And ta-da! I now have an elevated looking linen closet to enjoy.

Now that I have this pretty shelving, who is going to help me keep it organized? Lol.
