DIY Art with minwax 2022 color of the year
This is a sponsored post by Minwax. All opinions are my own.
Have you all seen the latest DIY of making textured art with joint compound? I've wanted to try it for months, and when Minwax asked me to be a part of the 2022 Color of the Year announcement, I knew this was the perfect opportunity to try out this trend.
But before we get into the details of making the DIY art, let me officially share that the 2022 Minwax Color of the Year is Gentle Olive! It's a perfect balance of a soft, sage-like green that evokes nature vibes, and it's the perfect way to bring in nature indoors. I couldn't have been more thrilled about this color announcement because green is also one of my favorite colors! I mean, just look at my kitchen makeover on Instagram.
Ok, so now let's get into this project. First, I assembled all my supplies:
Blank canvas
Joint compound
1 x 2 x 4 craft board
Gentle Olive
Gloves
Synthetic brush
Taking my blank canvas, I measured the wood to make the frame and made a few cuts for all four sides. I then cut four additional supports to lay the canvas inside the frame for a snug fit.
Using a nail gun, I secured the frame together and applied a coat of pre-stain wood conditioner. Once the frame was dry to the touch, I used wood glue to apply the support pieces. I then set it to the side to allow time for the glue to set.
During that time, I worked on making the DIY texture art. I began by randomly applying joint compound on the canvas in different directions using a plastic spatula. This was so much fun to do because basically, there is no wrong way to do it! Just keep applying the joint compound until you feel good about how your art is looking.
Once the glue on the frame was dry, it was time to apply the Gentle Olive wood finish water-based penetrating stain. I've been using Minwax stains for various projects, but this was the first time I've used a solid stain by Minwax, and I loved the depth of the color it left on the frame.
I applied the stain on all sides using a synthetic brush and then let it dry. During this time, I sprayed a light coat of white spray paint on the DIY textured art to give it a more uniform look.
Once the frame and DIY art were dry, I just popped the canvas inside the frame and secured the frame using glue to the supports, and I was all done! I absolutely loved the outcome and am excited to use Gentle Olive stain again for another project that needs a pop color all inspired by the serenity of nature.
