2024 Home Project List

This will be my third year sharing a home project list and I finally found a pretty great method to make sure I actually cross these projects off my list. First, the list has to be manageable! In 2022, I had a list with six projects and two of them involved tearing down walls and breaking tile floors and another project involved creating smart storage for the WHOLE HOUSE. What was I thinking??? If you were not around then, I’ll cut to the chase and let you know I didn’t complete one project on that list. Mainly, because I had an incredibly hard year, but also, those projects were completely unrealistic in terms of time and my wallet.

Anywho, I got smarter and made a more realistic list for 2023, and HOT DAMN, I crossed off every last project. Four projects for the year, seems to be my sweet spot, to to not mess up a good thing, here is my list of four projects I want to accomplish in my home in 2024 in no particular order.

Converting My Home Office to My Son’s Bedroom

Some of you may be confused by this project, because you remember that I created a beautiful home office for the Fall 2020 One Room Challenge. I truly love this space. I put so much hard work into designing a space that would help me productive and feel like a sweet escape from the rest of the house. However, our needs as a family have evolved and I have made the really tough decision to convert my home office into a bedroom for my son.

In March, he will turn 18, and in May, he will graduate from high school and begin a new journey for himself. He’s always asked me if that room in the basement could be his and I am finally relenting because I no longer work in my home office since I have switched jobs over a year ago and commute to our headquarters up to four days a week. It’ll be bittersweet for sure, but I am excited to create a new space for him (anyone remember when I made over his room for his 15th birthday?).

Converting My Son’s Room to My New Home Office aka She-Cave

With the switch of making my home office in the basement my son’s room, that means I get to create an entirely new space for myself in his old bedroom! I haven’t quite figured out my design plan yet but I do know that I want a desk for the 1-2 days I work from home, a comfy chair to relax in while I scroll TikTok, an area to store my growing book collection (fun fact, I used to be an avid reader and before I moved to this home in 2019, I donated over 100 books that I had accumulated over the years), and a spot for a bike or walking pad. The room isn’t generous in size, but I think with some smart space planning I can make it work.

Also, bonus points for that room is I will have natural light! That was the biggest drawback of having my office in the basement was that there were no windows and no natural light.

I haven’t yet created a design board for this room, but I have begun to collect some inspo images. You can check that out here!

French Patio Doors for the Basement

Y’all, the sliding doors in my basement are HORRIBLE. I am pretty sure they are original to the house, which means they are more than 30 years old. The door at this point is completely broken and is terrible at keeping out drafty air. I’m honestly embarrassed with them which also the reason I have never shown that side of the basement with the doors.

Ideally, I would get french patio doors with the built-in blinds so that I won’t have to worry about putting up some type of curtain. Vertical blinds had been installed in front of the sliding doors but I took them down as soon as I moved in because I absolutely DESPISE vertical blinds and they will not be going back up!

Updating the Landscaping

Over the last few years I have made a few changes to the exterior landscaping to include removal of a few trees and bushes, adding new mulch, and general upkeep to ensure the plants and shrubs aren’t growing like crazy. But now I really want to step up the curb appeal especially considering where my townhome is located once you enter the neighborhood. I want to be one of those homes, folks drive by to show their friends!

However, there are some points I have to consider for the landscaping. First, it has to be super low maintenance landscaping. I’m not even going to fool myself into thinking I will be out there on my hands and knees, pruning, cleaning, and de-weeding anything. Also, I definitely have to consider where I live and what types of plants and flowers will grow well here. I’m super new to this, but I am at least aware of the USDA gardening zones which can help determine the best types of plants for your yard. If you’re interested in learning more, here’s a link to the USDA plant hardiness zone map. Once you find your zone, you can then research plants that will thrive in your yard.

I’m excited to start exploring the options and possibilities to glow up my home’s curb appeal!

So that’s the list! I’m sure I will tackle additional projects in my home (like uopdating outdated fixtures like light switches) will occur, but these four will be my main focus for the year.
